Islands are a shovel expansion
Prehistoric Farm islands exist so you can keep completing fossil sets after ranch sites are too small a loop. They are not a separate hatch machine.
Ocean Explore (fish, Grotto, Mosasaurus) is a later layer even if you pass water to get there.
How do I reach fossil islands?
Buy a bigger boat, leave ranch waters, and keep sailing until a new dig area loads. Spawn hull may not count as bigger — test, do not assume.

Do not mix steal and dig
Prehistoric Farm islands feed Dr. Ivy with bone sets. Grotto feeds a different egg story. If you came for fossils, stay on glowing dirt.
Grotto coordinates were not clearly shown on the clips for this pass.
If you surface with a sea reptile egg, that is still ocean loot — park it using whatever hatch prompt the HUD offers, and do not assume it completes a fossil set on Prehistoric Farm islands.
